Discover

Discover is the Company Section programme aimed 11 to 15 year-olds. It was introduced at the beginning of the 2007/08 session.

Zone and Sub-zones

The Discover programme is built around three zones: Community; Recreation; and Skills. Within each zone there are 4 sub-zones:

Community     Recreation     Skills
Christian Faith* Christian Faith* Christian Faith*
International Health & Lifestyle Creativity
Local & National Outdoor & Adventure Interests
Nature & Environment Sports & Games Life Skills

Award Scheme

The award scheme for the Discover programme has one badge for each zone:

Community     Recreation     Skills
Community Badge (Level 1 shown) Recreation Badge (Level 1 shown) Skills Badge (Level 1 shown)
7 points 10 points 7 points

Within a session, you must gain the specified number of points in a zone in order to be awarded the badge for that zone. 1 point is gained by taking part in 1 hour of activity associated with that zone.

There are rules about which sub-zone some of these points must come from. The list below explains the requirements:

Zone Sub-zone Requirement*
Community Christian Faith 1 point minimum
International 1 point minimum
Local & National 1 point minimum
Nature & Environment 1 point minimum
+3 points free choice
Recreation Christian Faith 1 point minimum
Health & Lifestyle 1 point minimum
Outdoor & Adventure 1 point minimum
Sports & Games 1 point minimum
+6 points free choice
Skills Christian Faith 1 point minimum
Creativity 1 point minimum
Interests 1 point minimum
Life Skills 1 point minimum
+3 points free choice
* a maximum of 4 points per sub-zone may count towards your points total for the zone (this only effects the Recreation zone)

Having gained the required number of points in a zone you will be awarded Level 1 of the badge for that zone. In the subsequent session you can begin to accumulate points towards Level 2 of that badge.

Compass Badge

No matter what age you are when you join Company Section, once you have gained 6 points (2 from each zone) in your first session, you will be awarded the Compass Badge.

Discovery Badge

In your second session in Company Section, having gained the 24 points required for the Community, Recreation and Skills badges, you may gain a further 6 points (taking your total for the session to 30), and providing you fulfil the criteria listed below, you will be awarded the Discovery Badge.

  • take part in a residential experience (weekend away or camp)
  • play an active role in a Company, Battalion or Church event
  • have good attendance for the session

Your Choice

The introduction of the Discover programme is a perfect opportunity for us to provide you with more choice about what you do at Company Section. Where the number of Officers allows, we will aim to provide you with, at the very least, a choice between 2 activities.

Our meeting night will retain its ‘core’ structure, as shown on the Programme. We will offer a choice of Discover Sessions that you can take part in.

With choice comes responsibility! If you want to gain enough points to be awarded your badges, you will have to ensure that you complete enough activities in each of the zones, and in the required sub-zones. Help is at hand, in the form of My Discover - your personal online Discover record!
